ENGLISH
The gate’s opening. Whether you think of the gates that lead to Hades. This period of composing, for me, with the harpsichord and the piano... timelines were crossed. If you think about it, it’s about crawling inside the bloodline, the bloodline of the piano that lead to the harpsichord and back. So, the information of mother to daughter and daughter to mother, what they’ve been struggling with for centuries, trying to find their own feminine power but getting all mixed up and stealing fire from the men. So this record was very much about crossing over into different... consciousness. Whether you call it death, death of the soul or death of a portion of you that has had to wake up to the truth of certain things that were dormant. So this is almost a sort of dream and yet it is her reality at the same time, and I think that’s what’s so scary to her. Mike Lipscombe, the director, seemed to have quite a handle on symbology, and he wanted to play this out within a dream color. So naturally, her perceptions of what she thought was going on... well, they’re all crumbling all around her. I
think that happens to most people when you’re ripping the mask off your face. Trying to bring this to the visual world was quite a challenge. We talked about stealing fire. That was something that Boys for Pele, which this album... that’s what I was exploring. To access the shadow side, the Dark Prince. Not Satan, so all Christians, you know, hold on to your John Thomas. You can’t get those mixed up or you don’t really know your archetypes very well. But, you know, the resentment that I had for the men that could channel and plug into this archetype of the Dark Prince dissipated when, when I realized, for me, that the Dark Prince was pushing a white cashmere Chanel little number, was a woman and drove an ice-cream truck. Believe it or not I was on green screen most of the time. I seem to live my life on green screen. But this was an extremely physical shoot. I was rolling around on the ground, being dragged behind chairs. There were movements, obviously, when I had to be suspended and flying and moving around. But it was a mixture of the tangible world that Tori was in and the world she was trying to come to terms with. This is the opposite of ’Jupiter’ in that Tori is trying to come into the earth plane from... her land of misperceptions.

GERMAN

Nicht Satan, also alle Christen, haltet euch an John Thomas.

Eppure queste sono state riprese estremamente fisiche.

Shattering Sea

  • Listen

Instrumental Version

Original "Prelude op. 31 no. 8, The Song of the Mad Woman on the Sea Shore" by Charles-Valentin Alkan

  • Lyrics

That is not my blood on the bedroom floor
That is not the glass that I threw before

He gets his power from tide and wave
But grains of sand are my domain

His tempest surged an angry flash
Then through my arms formed a sea of glass

Shattering sea
Closing my eyes
Shattering sea
Closing my eyes
Shattering sea
Closing my eyes

Every line
Every curve
Every twist
Every turn of every brutal word
Every turn, every line
Every twist, every turn
Every curve of every brutal word

That is not my blood on the bedroom floor
That is not the glass that I threw before

"Night of Hunters is a song cycle that begins with a shattering of a relationship as the sun begins to slowly disappear and dusk moves in. Alone in an old Georgian House on the river Bandon on the outskirts of Kinsale Co Cork Ireland, tori begins to piece together what has just happened in Shattering Sea. The "him" in tori’s life we learn carries the force of tide and wave as she carries the force of fire." (Track-by-track commentary first published on Amazon on July 2011)

"While I was traveling around on tour last year, the one thing that kept coming up over and over again from people was how quickly their lives were changing, how they woke up one morning, and they went to work, and then they realized that the business they were working for was closing down. And then they realized that they were having to move. The upheaval that life was bringing so many people, from country to country that I was visiting, made me think: if I’m going to talk about life in the twenty-first century, which the song cycle has to reflect — some kind of reality of that time frame — I felt that one of the key elements had to be that so much can happen in such a short amount of time.

"So I decided to have this occur from sundown to sunup. The backstory is simply that this couple had made the crossing, the Atlantic crossing from the New World to the Old World, on a sailboat. And they have ended up in this old Georgian house on the River Bandon. You don’t know for how long they’ve been there, but the boat is in the Kinsale Harbor. And the shattering of their relationship occurs. That’s how the record starts. And she spends the rest of the night — it’s a psychological adventure for her — piecing together what’s happened."

ON: You’ve used sailboats before, in "Snow Cherries from France," which you wrote for your husband [sound engineer Mark Hawley]. Why the imagery of sailboats?

"Why sailboats? I think that we have a real love for the water, both of us. And it’s just been part of our life and relationship — not sailing, more little boats, not yachts. It’s little speedboats, you know, little runners that run around on the ocean inlet down in the Tropics. And I’ve always had a fascination about people that can live on the water, have no responsibility, are citizens of the world — not just one country, but can go from country to country, with that kind of freedom." (Opera News, October 2011)

The piece is based on a nineteenth-century prelude by Charles-Valentin Alkan named ‘Song Of The Madwoman On The Sea-Shore’, but Tori had other ideas. “When I realised what the title was for that piece I thought, okay, with my reputation I can’t have the word ‘madwoman’ in the title!” she laughs. “But I do think that when a relationship is at a crossroads and there’s blood on the floor and broken glass everywhere, there is a madness there, so I decided to harness the melody of the piece and take it to another place, to bring his voice in as well. Lyrically, I thought it was a good opportunity to explain what their forces were; his comes from the tide and wave and hers comes from fire, and unfortunately they are at a place of brutality.” (Wears the Trousers, September 26, 2011)

ENGLISH

First of all, that piano was definitely an art piece. It couldn’t play. But I guess if you’re gonna spray paint on a piano, you’ve gotta figure it might just affect the sound of it. I would say that the idea of finding a voice, you have to go back to children because most of us when we were children, you didn’t think about I need to find my voice, because you said what you wanted to say. I will say that rolling around in a box was not the easiest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But I had been photographed in this box by Cindy Palmano. And I think in 1991 when this was shot, the whole saying thinking out of the box was’t really so cliche. And I liked the idea of music box, trying to break out of it as a musician. This is the first video Cindy and I did together. We were quite close at this point. We were forming a bond, and I guess I was able to sing and reveal things because there was a trust level, and a respect level. This was really Cindy’s vision. All this, you know, the details, every detail came from Cindy’s mind. We would talk for hours and hours and hours, eat dinner together, hang out at her house, so things like the metallic and gold-looking elements meant something to her.
But to hear her speak and talk about it, of course, it made sense, and when I saw it, I felt it. The video was very much a collaboration, me as the songwriter and her interpretation of what I was singing about. Um, Cindy has a scientific mind. We think very differently and I think that was part of the marriage we had. She was intellect and I was emotion. Imagine the fellowship of our separate rings, that’s what made our marriage. I didn’t always know what she was doing, but it didn’t matter, because... you make an agreement in a creative marriage. You don’t always know what your lover’s doing and you shouldn’t, or you’re a spy and that doesn’t work, so there needs to be a freedom. And we both needed to hear our own voice. And it wasn’t just about hers, and it wasn’t just about mine. There was room for both. And that’s what really the song was about.

FRENCH

On était déjà assez proches.

Twinkle

  • Lyrics

Sure that star can twinkle
And you’re watching it do
Boy so hard boy so hard
But I know a girl
Twice as hard
And I’m sure
Said I’m sure she’s watching it too
No matter what tie she’s got in her right dresser
Tied
I know she’s watching that star

Gonna twinkle
Gonna twinkle
Gonna twinkle

And last time I knew
She worked at an abbey in Iona
She said “I killed a man T
I’ve gotta stay hidden in this abbey”
But I can see that star
When she twinkles
And she twinkles
And I sure can
That means
I sure can

That means
I sure can
So hard
So hard

“Yet the record isn’t finished until ‘Twinkle;’ it just wasn’t finished until that song. That level of the flame, feeding the flame, because after all the stars, the fire, I had to go into that place of becoming that instead of trying to find it again.” (B-Side Magazine, May/June 1996)

Bearing gifts from the east
From the east

Some say a star will rise again
in the hearts of humankind
Some say we have been in exile
What we need is solar fire

Star of wonder, star of night,
Star of royal Beauty
Westward leading, still proceeding
a star of wonder

We bring Myrrh for him
From the east Frankincense
From the east

Star of wonder, star of night,
Star of royal Beauty
Westward leading, still proceeding
Star of wonder, star of night
Star of royal beauty
Westward leading, still proceeding
seeding a star of wonder

  • Quotes
"I remember thinking “We Three Kings” was written in the 1800s. But when I sat in church, I would think “Where are the Persians? I don’t see any when I hear this tune. There aren’t any coming over the hill.” And when I heard “Star of Wonder” I felt “Where are the Magi?” As I’ve been exposed to other cultures, I’ve also realized that so many of them have celebrated the birth of the sun—again, that’s S-U-N, not S-O-N—for thousands and thousands of years. It started to make sense to me that this music hadn’t just been created by people a hundred years before". (Innerviews - 11/19/09)

"How did you approach making these songs your own — “Star of Wonder,” for example?
I’ve been curious my whole life about the story of the wise men and Persian mysticism. I always thought, “I don’t hear anything of their culture in arrangements of ‘We Three Kings.’ So I began to think to myself, “Alright then, in my story, you’re going to know that you’re coming across the desert, and you’re going to get a sense of these men and their culture.” That’s the thing — growing up as a minister’s daughter, sometimes I would just think a lot of what I was hearing was really where these people were during their own times. So I wanted to bring back some of the roots that I think the stories are talking about. For “Star of Wonder,” think Led Zeppelin, of course.

That’s always a good place to start.
I love the work that they did with their Arabic string arrangements. So I played for John Philip Shenale, talked him through my vision, and he really got it. I tracked it with the guys first — Matt and Jon — and they got a sense of the rhythm. We laid down the rhythm track first with the Wurlitzer, and that gave it that early Zeppelin sound. Then we brought in everything that you could possibly imagine percussion-wise for Matt to play, from tympanis to concert bass drums, two octaves of concert bells, along with his kit and all the other ethnic percussion. Matt had a huge palette to work with, which was exciting.

So “Star of Wonder” has that flavor — you’ll recognize the carol in the chorus. But it has beautiful dancing girls now. In my seasonal world, I think beautiful dancing girls celebrating the rebirth of light — in the Christian story, the poetry for that is the birth of a baby boy. But the rebirth of light that happens every year has been celebrated by our ancestors for thousands of years and I wanted to capture that." (Keyboard - 12/09)
